History

Primeval Ink was founded in 1997 by Suzanne Shepherd and Andi Lineweaver. We wanted to create a place with a pleasant atmosphere, where we could not only work, but also feel comfortable and know that our clients felt comfortable and reassured.

We have often heard our clients say that our shop is the cleanest, nicest or most relaxing tattoo shop they have ever been in. We have often said that we are not geniuses. We just really care about the clients. They can tell, and that's what works for us.

Primeval Ink first opened its doors for business in our original location in White Center ("Rat City") in West Seattle. On March first 1997 it was a cold, rainy day, the furnace wasn’t working, but Suzanne and Andi were tattooing … the first tattoo done in our shop was a small heart with a name. We soon became known as "The Ladies". As we lived in the neighborhood, clients would come up to us in the grocery store or the local Mexican restaurant, and want to show off their tattoos. We repaired and covered up a lot of gang tattoos and home-made tattoos and met people from many different nationalities and cultures.

We moved from Seattle to open our shop in Monroe, in November of 2001. We were the first tattoo studio in Monroe that lasted for more than a season. We weren't sure at first how well we would do in a small town like Monroe, but soon were reassured that our decision had been right.

We added a shop when we moved into Olympia to open on April 1st 2005. Olympia is a home-coming for Suzanne who was raised here. April 1st was both a happy day of new beginnings and a sad day because our old faithful dog Cody passed on that same morning.

Most recent was our relocation into the Olympia downtown core, next door to Rainy Day Records, near the YMCA, Fish Tale Brew Pub, and The State Theater, home of Harlequin Productions. Primeval’s new location has added some giant floral features to the murals beautifying downtown, and was featured on the front page of The Olympian Sept 28, 2015. Olympia shop also features free parking which is an unusual bonus for a downtown business.

Shortly after our move into downtown Olympia we were able to negotiate a change of management in our Monroe shop so that we can concentrate all of our efforts towards Olympia. Our own talented and otherwise fantastic Samantha Walsh has taken over ownership of the Monroe location which has been renamed Inkblot Tattoo and Gallery. Dawn Ashby is still to be found in Monroe working with Sam at Inkblot where she continues to amaze.

Andi and Suzanne were trained in the traditional manner by apprenticeship, coming into the business in 1994-1995. Andi came from a 20 year career in social work. Suzanne has a Masters Degree in Social Work. At Primeval Ink, it seems we can combine the best of both worlds.

All of our artists have been trained in the traditional manner. Each one brings his or her truly unique vision and method of expression to the challenging medium of tattoo. All of us love our work and truly appreciate and care for our clients. It’s not just the art, the clients are what make this work really fascinating for us on a day to day basis.

We are proud to know that Primeval Ink consistently gets great word of mouth which is of course the best kind of advertising there is!

FAQ

And some questions you want answered but don't ask!

How much does it cost?

At Primeval Ink we have a $60 minimum and we charge $125 an hour. We will give you an estimate ahead of time so you can know what to expect and plan for. The "average" tattoo usually costs anywhere from $90-$150. Plus tax. The Department of Revenue regards a tattoo as a "thing" rather than a "service".

Do you take credit cards?

Yes, we gladly accept Mastercard, Visa, and cash. But no checks!

Does it hurt?

It does hurt, but probably not as much as you think, or there wouldn’t be so many tattoos out there! Actually, it varies quite a bit from person to person and from one area of the body to another. People vary widely in how they perceive pain. It also depends on your health and your attitude toward having the work done. If you choose a tattoo to empower yourself and create a transition in your life, then it makes a great deal of difference. A tattoo is a permanent change on your body and should not be undertaken lightly. It is also nice to know there are various topical numbing agents available which make getting a tattoo much more comfortable.

What if I decide I want it removed … or covered up?

If you are already thinking that way before you get the tattoo, we probably won’t be willing to do it. However, if you do need to have a tattoo removed, we will refer you to a laser removal clinic, or discuss doing a cover up for you. Do be advised, laser removal is painful and much more expensive than having a tattoo done. A coverup is often possible but each coverup has its own unique challenges and is again, usually bigger and more expensive than what you are covering up. Keep in mind that dark ink cannot be covered up by lighter ink. Darker areas of an old tattoo must be disguised within the coverup. Sometimes a combination of laser removal and coverup can work wonders. Another removal process utilizes salt and is sometimes effective for small areas.

Do I need an appointment?

Appointments are advised, however we do welcome walk-ins if the time is available. We will always try to accommodate your needs. If you do wish an appointment, expect to pay a deposit in advance. The deposit will go towards your tattoo, but if you don’t make your appointment, your deposit will be forfeit.

What if I can’t draw my own design?

You don’t need to be able to draw. We are here to do that for you. Sometimes we can help you to narrow down your choice of design by discussing some of the many options we have in our collection of reference books or flash art (or which can be found on the internet) which can be adapted for you, or used as inspiration pieces for something completely original. If you are having an artist create a one-of-a kind piece of art for you, expect to pay for some drawing time, of $20-50.

If I am not yet 18 can I get a tattoo with parental consent?

Not in the State of Washington! We are very careful to check picture ID as it is a misdemeanour to tattoo anyone under the age of 18, even with parental consent.

Do you do piercing?

Yes, we do, but it is wise to set an appointment for a piercing due to the fact that our piercers are not always available.

Do you use any of those glow-in-the-dark inks?

No. We don’t trust them at all. Who’s to say what would be in ink that glows in the dark. We don’t want to take responsibility for putting that into your skin, or into ours for that matter.

Do you ever say no to doing a particular tattoo?

Yes, we certainly do. If we think it is offensive or if we think it is unwise, we are free to refuse to do that tattoo. We never try to talk anybody into doing any tattoo. We do often talk people out of doing certain tattoos!

Is it safe to get tattooed in this shop?

All of our needles are single-use only. We use an autoclave for sterilization. Pigment for each tattoo is thrown away at the end of the tattoo. Artists are all instructed in strict standards of proper infection control. Washington State licensing requires each artist complete a mandatory blood borne pathogens training on an annual basis.

How long before my tattoo is healed?

We usually advise that a month is the minimum healing time, even though some tattoos may appear healed sooner than that. It all depends on the health of the individual and the area that is tattooed. Should you come in for a free touch-up, we will inspect the tattoo closely to look for any shininess or cloudiness indicating the tattoo is not quite ready.

How do I care for my new tattoo?

Every artist will give you aftercare instructions and tell you what do do about caring for your new tattoo. In general, you should let it rest (bandaged) for an hour or so, then wash gently with soap and water, rinse, then pat dry with a clean tissue. An after care product can be used which is either an ointment, balm, or a lotion of high quality, preferably alcohol-free. Many quality balms and ointments contain coconut oil but can be fairly expensive. Pure coconut oil (found in your local grocery in the cooking oil section) on the other hand, is not expensive, is an excellent skin conditioning product and also useful for removing makeup, it is not oily and soaks in well. Minimal use of aftercare product is important so that the tattoo be able to breathe, but be protected from being too dry. Keep it out of the sun, and do not soak in water. Don’t scratch or pick at your tattoo. If your artist is using the clear sticky bandage of the same type used on burn patients, listen carefully to instruction on when to remove the dressing which can usually be left on for 24 hours but should be removed if it begins to itch or is too moist.

Do you tattoo hands, feet, faces?

Such very visible tattoos are up to the discretion of the artist and the shop owners..... we usually say no to very visible tattoos if the person asking is not already heavily tattooed. Also, our insurance company would object to tattoos on the face. Sometimes we will be willing to do a tattoo behind the ear or on the back of the neck if it is discreet. Tattoos on hands on feet are subject to special limitations due to the nature of the skin in those areas. We cannot guarantee those tattoos or offer more than one touch-up.

What does Primeval mean, and how do you pronounce it?

Primeval (pronounced Prime-Evil) doesn’t have anything to do with "evil" . Primeval means "the original thing" as in "the Forest Primeval", the first one and the original one. Tattooing is one of the oldest of mankind’s means of self expression and body ornamentation … the Ice Man had tattoos …

Suzanne and Andi have done all but one of my many tattoos and I show off every single one as real works of art. I've known both of these ladies for over 20 years, was around when they decided to become tattoo artists and they keep growing and learning and both have become consummate artists. Also, 2 of my 3 sons are wearing Primeval Ink.

Highly recommend this shop! Patrick was awesome!! My sister and I got wrist tattoos and love them! He was very professional yet friendly and made us feel comfortable. Definitely coming back!!

I got a tattoo here last week, and it was a terrific experience. Me and my brother got matching tattoos while he was here on leave from the Navy. The tattoos were fairly small (2" x 4") and Nathan performed the work very well with a strong attention to detail. This was my first tattoo and I was not sure what to expect. It was quick, comfortable, clean, and had a good atmosphere. I now am planning several additional tattoos, and look forward to working with Nathan again. Five stars.

Bree was so NICE! We were comfortable and enjoyed our time in the parlor. We were there to celebrate because Chris and Suzie are now cancer-free. The tattoos commemorated the power of women to power-through difficult times together. Thank you!

Couldn't of had a better or more chill time at Primeval Ink Tattoo. Julia McKay is one of those people that when you meet her, you know she is the real deal. I am relocating to the other side of the state but will make the voyage back to see Julia for the next 2 I am getting.

My tattooing journey started with a piece of ink art on my shoulder. I have been priviledged to know Andi and Suzanne for many years. The work I have seen is beyond "Supreme". Being that the artists each have different styles, anyone can get a tattoo that will fit their life style. I am priviledged to have 3 tattoos by Andi. I live in Canada, many miles away from their shop. But I will only go to Primeval Ink because I know that with Primeval Ink I will get what I want, I will feel well looked after and professionally they rank A+. Check it out and see what these artists can do for you. You will be pleased with the results.

My mom and I went in and got tattoos in honor of her 67th birthday. Mom had been talking about wanting a tattoo for years, and I'm so happy we came here. We had appointments with Presley, who was really warm and wonderful at putting Mom at ease about the process. She came out with a beautiful little lilac tattoo and she couldn't be happier. Thank you so much Presley!

Patrick at Primeval did pieces for my sister, brother in law, and me, and they all turned out very, very good. He really takes his time making sure the design is perfect, and perfectly placed. I have seven tats (including a few by some Japanese pros) and his is my favorite! Highly recommend!

LOVED IT - I went to Primeval Ink on my 18th birthday for my very first tattoo and they not only did an absolutely AMAZING job, but the studio had a great feel and was very clean and comfortable to be worked on!

Suzanne worked with me until I was completely happy with a complex flower design. This was my first tattoo so she was very artful in suggesting things that would make it a better tattoo but not take away from my original idea. Her skill as an artist was extremely helpful as her sketches were EXACTLY like the tattoo. No surprises. My design took four sittings of 2 to 3 hours each and she was very sensitive to my pain level in how she proceeded with the design. Can not recommend her highly enough. This will be my only tattoo and I will treasure it forever as an incredible work of art.

This is one of the nicest tattoo shops I have been to. The staff is welcoming, and very easy to talk with. Susanne did my tattoo and I absolutely love it. She made me feel comfortable and relaxed. I will be back and plan on telling my friends that this is the place to go. Thank you so much Susanne......:) You are awesome.

I've had a couple pieces done at Primeval Ink and am VERY happy with the results. The atmosphere of the place is very cool, it has a very arty feel to it. It's also very friendly and with a high standard of work. They did a small tattoo that I've been thinking about getting for some time. Later, my daughter (an aspiring artist) came up with a laughing wolf design that I just had to have and they made it a reality. This is a great place with great people and I recommend it highly!

Don B.

Amazing! Both Patrick and Julia were perfect to work with. We showed them what we wanted and they went with it and everything was perfect! The atmosphere was welcoming and we felt "at home" with them. Thank you!!

Lucy P.

Love, love, love Primeval Ink! All three of my tattoos have been from Primeval and they are amazing! Suzanne, Andi, and Patrick (also Analise and Ben from years past) are amazing artists who take time and care to make sure my tattoo(s) and experience are perfect! My husband and I both love Primeval Ink

Melanie E.

My mom and I just got tattoos from Patrick here, and it was a great experience. He was super accommodating and friendly, patiently working us into his busy schedule and staying late so mom could get her (1st) tattoo before she flew home. He was clear about the issues involved with where I originally wanted mine, but was willing to work with me so that it was in a place I like that would also heal and look decent. Stoked to have found my go-to tattoo place in town - the kind of tattoo shop you can take your mom to!

Liz S.

Primeval Ink does excellent work--their art work is amazing. They take the time to talk with you, work with you, and develop an artistic design that in my case, turned out even better than I had imagined. Suzanne really pours her soul into her work. I went in for a tattoo of a Bulldog, and she researched Bulldogs, watched how they moved & their characteristics, then designed a wonderful tattoo. I was so impressed with Primeval Ink that I went back--each subsequent piece of artwork was beautifully done. I strongly recommend them!

Amy R.

Over the years I've had a lot of work done starting with a dragon and eventually a full back piece. Much of my work was done by the artists of Primeval Ink and I couldn't be happier and showing of the work is something I do with great pride. I've been in tattoo shops in many countries and I have to say that Primeval Ink is the best I've seen. The shop is always clean and neat with no scooters in the middle of the shop and no prospective customers who've had too much liquid courage in preparation for a tattoo hanging around. Suzanne and Andi know their craft and are wonderful artists but beyond that, they are wonderful people. They make the process of tattoo easy and comfortable no matter if you go to them for your first or 50th piece of art.

George P.

Had an awesome experience a couple weeks ago with Julia McKay. Went in with an idea and she drew it up, knew I wanted a thigh piece and she made it happen. Pics don't do it justice. Nice clean shop, way comfortable setting. Going back for more :-)

Heidi H.

I could not be happier with the work that Suzanne has done on my arm. We started just half sleeve, progressed to 3 /4, and now I have an almost complete arm sleeve. I am so excited to see the finished product.

Everywhere I go, people ask me about it and comment on its quality. I am so thankful that she shared her artistic talents with me.

Jen D.

Suzanne did my first tattoo in 2008. We are now working on a full back piece. I came in with a lot of vague ideas about what I wanted and somehow, she pulled out all the best bits of those ideas and combined them to create a fun, whimsical, fantastical, charming design that I'm completely in love with. I can hardly wait to see how it turns out when it's completed!
