Testimonials

I cannot say enough good things about this awesome tattoo shop. Suzanne and Andi are amazing as is all the staff. The quality of the tattooing is top notch. Clean, friendly and reasonably priced. I've gone back time and time again.

I took my idea to several tattoo artists from Olympia to Seattle and found that this little shop tucked away on Steamboat Island was the perfect spot.

Primeval Ink is the only shop my family goes to. My father is covered in Suzanne and Andi's beautiful work. I plan to keep that tradition alive with my own skin. I'm off to a good start so far.

Great Work!

I will always remember getting my first tattoo at Primeval Ink. Andi set all my nerves to ease by telling some crazy off the wall stories. It was the best first tattoo experience I could of ever asked for. Great atmosphere, talented artists, and all around good honest people.

History

Primeval Ink was founded in 1997 by Suzanne Shepherd and Andi Lineweaver. We wanted to create a place with a pleasant atmosphere, where we could not only work, but also feel comfortable and know that our clients felt comfortable and reassured.

We have often heard our clients say that our shop is the cleanest, nicest or most relaxing tattoo shop they have ever been in. We have often said that we are not geniuses. We just really care about the clients. They can tell, and that's what works for us.

Primeval Ink first opened its doors for business in our original location in White Center ("Rat City") in West Seattle. On March first 1997 it was a cold, rainy day, the furnace wasn’t working, but Suzanne and Andi were tattooing … the first tattoo done in our shop was a small heart with a name. We soon became known as "The Ladies". As we lived in the neighborhood, clients would come up to us in the grocery store or the local Mexican restaurant, and want to show off their tattoos. We repaired and covered up a lot of gang tattoos and home-made tattoos and met people from many different nationalities and cultures.

We moved from Seattle to open our shop in Monroe, in November of 2001. We were the first tattoo studio in Monroe that lasted for more than a season. We weren't sure at first how well we would do in a small town like Monroe, but soon were reassured that our decision had been right.

We added a shop when we moved into Olympia to open on April 1st 2005. Olympia is a home-coming for Suzanne who was raised here. April 1st was both a happy day of new beginnings and a sad day because our old faithful dog Cody passed on that same morning.

Most recent was our relocation into the Olympia downtown core, next door to Rainy Day Records, near the YMCA, Fish Tale Brew Pub, and The State Theater, home of Harlequin Productions. Primeval’s new location has added some giant floral features to the murals beautifying downtown, and was featured on the front page of The Olympian Sept 28, 2015. Olympia shop also features free parking which is an unusual bonus for a downtown business.

Suzanne and Andi each work both shops though Andi focusses mostly on Monroe and Suzanne on Olympia. Andi is available both for tattooing and for piercing by appointment. Suzanne is available both for tattooing and for permanent cosmetics mostly in Olympia, and in Monroe by appointment.

Both shops are open most days excepting Sunday from Noon to 8:00 pm, and on some days open at 10:00 a.m.

Andi and Suzanne were trained in the traditional manner by apprenticeship, coming into the business in 1994-1995. Andi came from a 20 year career in social work. Suzanne has a Masters Degree in Social Work. At Primeval Ink, it seems we can combine the best of both worlds.

Dawn has been with us for over 15 years. She likes to open the shop in Monroe at 10:00 a.m. for her early morning appointments. She has developed into a fantastic designer with a truly unique vision.

We are proud to know that Primeval Ink consistently gets great word of mouth which is of course the best kind of advertising there is!

FAQ

And some questions you want answered but don't ask!

How much does it cost?

At Primeval Ink we have a $60 minimum and we charge $125 an hour. We will give you an estimate ahead of time so you can know what to expect and plan for. The "average" tattoo usually costs anywhere from $90-$150. Plus tax. The Department of Revenue regards a tattoo as a "thing" rather than a "service".

Do you take credit cards?

Yes, we gladly accept Mastercard, Visa, and cash. But no checks!

Does it hurt?

It does hurt, but probably not as much as you think, or there wouldn’t be so many tattoos out there! Actually, it varies quite a bit from person to person and from one area of the body to another. People vary widely in how they perceive pain. It also depends on your health and your attitude toward having the work done. If you choose a tattoo to empower yourself and create a transition in your life, then it makes a great deal of difference. A tattoo is a permanent change on your body and should not be undertaken lightly. It is also nice to know there are various topical numbing agents available which make getting a tattoo much more comfortable.

What if I decide I want it removed … or covered up?

If you are already thinking that way before you get the tattoo, we probably won’t be willing to do it. However, if you do need to have a tattoo removed, we will refer you to a laser removal clinic, or discuss doing a cover up for you. Do be advised, laser removal is painful and much more expensive than having a tattoo done. A coverup is often possible but each coverup has its own unique challenges and is again, usually bigger and more expensive than what you are covering up. Keep in mind that dark ink cannot be covered up by lighter ink. Darker areas of an old tattoo must be disguised within the coverup. Sometimes a combination of laser removal and coverup can work wonders. Another removal process utilizes salt and is sometimes effective for small areas.

Do I need an appointment?

Appointments are advised, however we do welcome walk-ins if the time is available. We will always try to accommodate your needs. If you do wish an appointment, expect to pay a deposit in advance. The deposit will go towards your tattoo, but if you don’t make your appointment, your deposit will be forfeit.

What if I can’t draw my own design?

You don’t need to be able to draw. We are here to do that for you. Sometimes we can help you to narrow down your choice of design by discussing some of the many options we have in our collection of reference books or flash art (or which can be found on the internet) which can be adapted for you, or used as inspiration pieces for something completely original. If you are having an artist create a one-of-a kind piece of art for you, expect to pay for some drawing time, of $20-50.

If I am not yet 18 can I get a tattoo with parental consent?

Not in the State of Washington! We are very careful to check picture ID as it is a misdemeanour to tattoo anyone under the age of 18, even with parental consent.

Do you do piercing?

Yes, we do, but it is wise to set an appointment for a piercing due to the fact that our piercers are not always available.

Do you use any of those glow-in-the-dark inks?

No. We don’t trust them at all. Who’s to say what would be in ink that glows in the dark. We don’t want to take responsibility for putting that into your skin, or into ours for that matter.

Do you ever say no to doing a particular tattoo?

Yes, we certainly do. If we think it is offensive or if we think it is unwise, we are free to refuse to do that tattoo. We never try to talk anybody into doing any tattoo. We do often talk people out of doing certain tattoos!

Is it safe to get tattooed in this shop?

All of our needles are single-use only. We use an autoclave for sterilization. Pigment for each tattoo is thrown away at the end of the tattoo. Artists are all instructed in strict standards of proper infection control. Washington State licensing requires each artist complete a mandatory blood borne pathogens training on an annual basis.

How long before my tattoo is healed?

We usually advise that a month is the minimum healing time, even though some tattoos may appear healed sooner than that. It all depends on the health of the individual and the area that is tattooed. Should you come in for a free touch-up, we will inspect the tattoo closely to look for any shininess or cloudiness indicating the tattoo is not quite ready.

How do I care for my new tattoo?

Every artist will give you aftercare instructions and tell you what do do about caring for your new tattoo. In general, you should let it rest (bandaged) for an hour or so, then wash gently with soap and water, rinse, then pat dry with a clean tissue. An after care product can be used which is either an ointment, balm, or a lotion of high quality, preferably alcohol-free. Many quality balms and ointments contain coconut oil but can be fairly expensive. Pure coconut oil (found in your local grocery in the cooking oil section) on the other hand, is not expensive, is an excellent skin conditioning product and also useful for removing makeup, it is not oily and soaks in well. Minimal use of aftercare product is important so that the tattoo be able to breathe, but be protected from being too dry. Keep it out of the sun, and do not soak in water. Don’t scratch or pick at your tattoo. If your artist is using the clear sticky bandage of the same type used on burn patients, listen carefully to instruction on when to remove the dressing which can usually be left on for 24 hours but should be removed if it begins to itch or is too moist.

Do you tattoo hands, feet, faces?

Such very visible tattoos are up to the discretion of the artist and the shop owners..... we usually say no to very visible tattoos if the person asking is not already heavily tattooed. Also, our insurance company would object to tattoos on the face. Sometimes we will be willing to do a tattoo behind the ear or on the back of the neck if it is discreet. Tattoos on hands on feet are subject to special limitations due to the nature of the skin in those areas. We cannot guarantee those tattoos or offer more than one touch-up.

What does Primeval mean, and how do you pronounce it?

Primeval (pronounced Prime-Evil) doesn’t have anything to do with "evil" . Primeval means "the original thing" as in "the Forest Primeval", the first one and the original one. Tattooing is one of the oldest of mankind’s means of self expression and body ornamentation … the Ice Man had tattoos …

Monroe Shop
Went to this tattoo shop out of curiosity and came out with retouched tattoos that look the best they ever have. Sam Walsh was my artist and she is so incredibly awesome! She was the kindest and sweetest and I would absolutely recommend her and this shop. You won't regret it. The shop is incredibly clean as well. Makes you feel at home and I think tattoo shops should be that way! Thank you so much Primeval Ink.

Olympia Shop
My tattooing journey started with a piece of ink art on my shoulder. I have been priviledged to know Andi and Suzanne for many years. The work I have seen is beyond "Supreme". Being that the artists each have different styles, anyone can get a tattoo that will fit their life style. I am priviledged to have 3 tattoos by Andi. I live in Canada, many miles away from their shop. But I will only go to Primeval Ink because I know that with Primeval Ink I will get what I want, I will feel well looked after and professionally they rank A+. Check it out and see what these artists can do for you. You will be pleased with the results.

Monroe Shop
I've had a couple pieces done at Primeval Ink and am VERY happy with the results. The atmosphere of the place is very cool, it has a very arty feel to it. It's also very friendly and with a high standard of work. They did a small tattoo that I've been thinking about getting for some time. Later, my daughter (an aspiring artist) came up with a laughing wolf design that I just had to have and they made it a reality. This is a great place with great people and I recommend it highly!

Olympia Shop
I have been wanting permanent eye make up for too long, made an appointment with Suzanne and started the process today ... the experience was excellent in a weird way (odd sensation having a tattoo on your eyelid) ... Suzanne was excellent, highly informative and extremely patient! I am looking forward to seeing her many more times as the years pass ... thank you, thank you, thank you :0)

I've had two pieces done at Primeval Ink, both by Dawn Ashby. She came highly recommended and I want to pass that on! She openly listened to what I wanted, drew the original pieces, and was open to suggestion! She helped me figure it all out and both of my tattoos are beautiful and I get compliments on them daily!

Olympia Shop
Highly recommend! Service is great! I emailed and received a reply the next morning. I came in to see Mitch and he had an art concept drawn up for me within a couple of days. Was completely responsive to my needs as a client. Very professional and willing to adapt. I had a piece done by Mitch. His technique is excellent, very clean, light, pain was minimal, lines are all clean and the work is healing perfectly in just one week. Highly recommend this studio. Also they are out of the way and private so you get the full attention of your artist.

LOVED IT - I went to Primeval Ink on my 18th birthday for my very first tattoo and they not only did an absolutely AMAZING job, but the studio had a great feel and was very clean and comfortable to be worked on!

Olympia Shop
Over the years I've had a lot of work done starting with a dragon and eventually a full back piece. Much of my work was done by the artists of Primeval Ink and I couldn't be happier and showing of the work is something I do with great pride. I've been in tattoo shops in many countries and I have to say that Primeval Ink is the best I've seen. The shop is always clean and neat with no scooters in the middle of the shop and no prospective customers who've had too much liquid courage in preparation for a tattoo hanging around. Suzanne and Andi know their craft and are wonderful artists but beyond that, they are wonderful people. They make the process of tattoo easy and comfortable no matter if you go to them for your first or 50th piece of art.

I've gotten three of my five tattoos here! Awesome people, great atmosphere, clean, and fair prices! I will definitely be coming back for more business in the future once I've added a bit more money to my 'tattoo fund' ;). Thank you, Dawn, for giving me my latest, absolutely beautiful, tattoo! You will definitely be seeing more of me!
